How to measure your balcony
A custom-made balcony blind will only fit perfectly if you measure correctly. How you measure depends on how you want to hang the blind: along the balusters, woven through the balusters, or around a curve. Choose your situation below. Tip: in addition to a tape measure, also get a piece of string – this is the most accurate way to measure curves and woven blinds.
1. Blind along the balusters
The most popular method: the blind hangs tightly against the inside or outside of the railing and is secured to the handrail and balusters with cable ties or elastic cord.
- Width: measure from post to post or from wall to wall. Measure at three heights (top, middle and bottom) and use the smallest measurement.
- Height: measure from the top of the handrail to the bottom rail or the balcony floor. If you want the blind to sit slightly below the handrail, subtract a few centimetres.
- Space for fastening: leave a few centimetres on all sides so you can pull the blind tight.
2. Blind woven through the balusters
Do you want to weave the blind back and forth through the balusters? Then the blind will travel a longer distance than the straight width of your balcony. How much longer depends on the distance between the balusters and how thick they are. Always measure with a piece of string.
- Tie or tape the start of the string to the first baluster where the blind should begin.
- Weave the string back and forth through the balusters, exactly as the blind will run: in front of one baluster and behind the next. Pull the string slightly taut, but not too tight.
- Mark the end point on the string with a piece of tape or a knot.
- Remove the string, lay it straight on the floor and measure its length with a tape measure. That is the width you should enter.
- Simply measure the height straight down from the top of the handrail.
3. Balcony with a curve or rounded corner
Does your balcony have a rounded shape, a rounded corner, or does the blind run around a corner? Never measure straight from corner to corner, as this will leave you short. Lay a piece of string along the railing, following the path the blind will take.
- Lay the string on the side where the blind will hang: on the inside or outside of the railing. On the outside, the curve is slightly longer.
- Are there multiple blinds? Then measure the width between two posts for each section or blind.
- For a woven blind around a curve, combine both methods: weave the string through the balusters and follow the curve.
4. Glass balcony: balcony sticker
For a glass balcony railing, choose a custom-made balcony sticker made from durable window film. Stick it to the balcony side of the glass; you choose whether the design is visible from the street or from your balcony.
- Measure the visible glass area within the edges or clips, in width and height.
- Leave about half a centimetre free all around so the sticker does not touch the edge or a clip.
- Does your balcony consist of multiple glass panels? Then measure and order one for each panel.
5. Consider how it will be attached
Determine where the blind will be attached: to balusters, tubes, or a steel frame. This determines which fastening materials you need. On the fastening and installation page, you can read how to hang the blind.
